At least I know what I don’t know

My wife, Marisa, and I are starting the process of getting our Foster Care license. Our intent is to adopt a child out of the Foster Care system. In all of this we will end up taking some child care classes. The best part is we were looking into taking some of these classes anyway because we realize we don’t know what we are doing when it comes to raising a 3 year old.

Letter to Senator Udall of Colorado

Dear Senator Udall,
I have never written to a government official before but feel compelled to do so now regarding the situation with the deficit debates currently raging in Washington and the water coolers around America.

What you propose in your letter is nice, but nowhere near enough to what needs to happen. I’m sorry but $4 trillion in cuts over 10 years is a joke. You should be working to pass a balanced budget this year.

Recently my family came to the realization that living beyond our means was destroying our future. We now do monthly budgets and do not violate them. We work more hours and are paying our debt so that by mid next year we will only have the mortgage left. We are committed to paying these debts by not taking vacations, liquidating non-essential assets, not eating out, not updating our cloths, and working extra.

I urge you to take a stronger stance on cutting spending (not just the wasteful stuff) eliminate the waste and cut the rest by several % across the board. And I mean really cut, not just reduce the increase. Cut, as in each department gets less money than it did last year.

I know I have asked you to do something that seems difficult, but what I will suggest next will really blow your mind.

I urge you to consider tax reform that not only closes corporate loop-holes (put there by congress no less), simplify the tax code for everyone, and actually tax everyone with an able-body or able-mind. Yes EVERYONE. Every man, woman, child (pick an age), old person, and immigrant (legal or illegal) should help pay for the services provided by our government. A recent report cited that 47% of tax returns filed pay $0. A decent amount of that group actually receives money from the IRS, like a refund, but they never even paid a dime to get refunded. I’m sure you are familiar with this little wealth redistribution effort. These policies are worthless and have done a grave disservice to the people of this nation. When you pay for something you value it. It is that simple. You could always go the consumption tax route but don’t make the mistake of adding luxury taxes (as what was attempted with the yacht tax).

Okay, so you are thinking I’m crazy with the tax everyone thing, but I’m not. If someone doesn’t have money they can work off their small amount of tax by volunteering with a charity (any 501c or the Job Corps). Problem solved. But regardless of income level, everyone should pay taxes or no one should pay taxes.

One last thing, provide a buy-out of Social Security option. Something like once you have contributed a certain amount you can opt out of future SS taxes by removing yourself from the disbursement rolls. The rate of return on SS dollars is crap; it doesn’t even keep up with inflation. The reason is simple, it isn’t a retirement investment program it’s wealth redistribution. So take some of my wealth and keep it, and let me be responsible for myself, because I am an American.

Respectfully,

John Ala
P.S. I do not envy your task, but you wanted the job. Good luck.

The Present

Live in the present. Each minute of each day is all that you have. What if this day were your last? It may be difficult to follow the path of love for a week but can you do it for the next minute? Pray to God for opportunities to walk out your faith today. Spend time in the Word of God today. Sing a song of praise and thanksgiving today. Tell your spouse, your kids, your parents how much you love them today. Live in the present and you will find the past full of pleasant memories and the future upon you before you know it.

The Future

You have dreams and goals and they are ahead of you. Look to the future with hope and anticipation but do not waist time plotting and planning. In this life the future is not guaranteed and the destination is rarely as sweet as the journey. Pray for goals that are of God so that you stay on the path of love. The future holds promise, but you cannot live in the future.

The past

Look to the past not with longing or regret but with praise and thanksgiving for all that God has brought you. Look to past accomplishments to remind you of what can be done. Look to past failures to teach you what you can do better. But do not dwell on the past or attempt to live there. You cannot live in the past.

More fun than a barrel of monkeys

Although I’m not exactly sure how fun a barrel of monkeys is, I’m certain Jeffrey has to be more fun than one. He is a self contained play machine. He can play for hours with just two plastic cups. He crawls around finding new things to bang on while stopping to bang some of his favorite noise makers (the air-vent being the most popular and noisy). Running the cup up and down the grate makes a fun shhhzzzzztttt sound. A little effort on my part to chase him or play circus or airplane elicits giggles and smiles. At least till I stop, then a few cries to let me know he wants more are my usual reward.

Sleeping is on track thanks to “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child” by Dr Marc Weissbluth. It is hard to actually recommend the book as the 450 pages is a really boring read. I think a 25 page companion that simply tells you what to do would be great and leave all the research yackity-yack for people that have time to read it. I know he is trying to make the reader comfortable with the advice but it can be hard to find amongst all the study results.

w3d – Baby Bjorn

What Works What Doesn’t (w3d) is a series of reviews of things I have tried.

By Marisa, Jeffrey’s Mom:

One of our favorite items! When we get physically tired of carrying the baby around in our arms (when he doesn’t want to be put down) or we have stuff to do around the house, we just plop him in the Baby Bjorn and it seems as though he falls asleep within minutes. I also take him to the grocery store, Costco, or anywhere else we need to get around, and he thoroughly enjoys it. For the most part, the comfort level for me is good- but the key if you have a bad/weak back is to get the model that has back support in it. It’s a little more expensive ($129.99 versus $99.99), but well worth the additional comfort.
